How to Perform a Web Site Review the Site Owner Will Greatly Appreciate
I love reviewing web sites. I see so many site owners making the same mistakes, that it makes it very simple for me to offer a few beneficial but simple tips without straining my brain. Most people who have a web site aren't making any money from it, but a few improvements could make a huge difference in their visitor response.
Site reviews fall under the category of helping yourself while helping others. You help others by telling them how to improve their site. You help yourself because most places that allow reviews allow you to post your own resource box which includes some information about you and a link to your own site.
Basic Information that every Site Review Should Contain:
1. Speed of site loading
Did the site load at a reasonable speed? Be sure to tell whether you have dial-up or high-speed internet access or else this information is useless. If you access the internet by modem, you can't give a fair assessment since your connection is relatively slow by today's standards. While the number of high speed internet users is steadily increasing, many people still have dial-up internet access. That is why site owners have to take these visitors into consideration when it comes to the size and download speed of the graphics on their website.
2. Purpose of the Site
Does the site make it clear what it is offering? The headline and first few paragraphs of a web site should tell you the reason for it exists, and more specifically why you should continue reading. If visitors can't tell what a site is about, they won't bite.
3.Factual
Does it answer most of your questions about the product or service it offers? One mistake many site owners make is assuming the visitor is familiar with what you're selling. Your product or service may be of value to beginners, but you will need to explain what it can do for them in order to draw their interest.
4. Order/Sign-up Process
If it's a sales site, is it easy to order the product or service? If it's a membership site, is it easy to sign up or is the sign-up link hidden? Do you have to jump through hoops to order the product? Does it offer common payment options or does it force you to write a check and mail it off...ugh!? If I wasn't such a big advocate of the idea that every offline business should have a website, I would wonder why sites that don't accept credit cards should even be on the net.
5. Spelling and Grammar
I'm not talking about being anal-retentive here. As a reformed perfectionist, I believe perfectionism is a waste of time. A site doesn't have to be perfect, but you will definitely find sites out there that obviously were not spell-checked at all. Someone commented that Armand Morin's sites (see gogenerator.com) always contain spelling errors. And I have seen one or two errors myself. However, at last report, Armand was making $50,000 a month. I think you'll agree with me that these few spelling errors don't seem to be affecting his sales much.
6. Does it make you want the product?
You have to be a member of the target audience to answer this question fairly. Obviously, if you don't have any children, you're not going to want a product geared towards parents. If you're not the target market, unless you can answer this objectively and fairly, you should to skip this question.
7. Pricing
Perception of price is very subjective, especially if you don't have the product in front of you. A good sales letter, however, will convince you that not only is the price fair, but also that the product is actually under-priced.
8. Marketing and Copywriting
The more you know about copywriting and marketing, the more helpful your site review will be. After all, how valuable can a site review be if the reviewer has never made a penny from their own site? But even a basic site review can help someone make their site more responsive.
Where can you find sites to review?
Search for "site review" or "get site review" on Google or Yahoo. Places where free site reviews are done usually also allow people to submit site reviews. You will see some reviews that are very uninformed, giving horrifically bad advice. But you'll be at an advantage now that you know some basic information to include in your review. Most importantly, giving a good review will make the recipient interested in what you have to offer on your own w
