How to Pick a Money Making Blog Theme

You've seen other people making money at blogging. Maybe they're online acquaintances, or blogs that you know, or maybe it's even family or friends. You decide you want to start blogging too with the intent of making money. So how do you pick a theme that can?

I once wrote an article on my personal blog that rocketed around the blogosphere. Within a week it had gotten 50,000 unique hits and within a months time it had peaked at 100,000 unique hits. And I didn't make a cent. Contrast that with another one of my websites that perhaps gets 200-300 hits a day total but makes me several hundred dollars a month in contextual advertising clicks. So why was the popular post so unsuccessful?

It's true that traffic equals money. But that's only if you can get something called conversions with that traffic. That means, how likely is your traffic going to click on an ad or buy an affiliate product?

My personal blog talks about anything and everything. It's my outlet to vent, to write silly things, to do whatever comes to my head, for fun. There is no direction, no theme, and no discipline. So that means my contextual ads are all over the map and my visitors aren't there for any particular reason except a little light reading, some relief from the mundane.

If you want to make money from a blog, your visitors need to be coming there for a reason, to learn more information specific to something. That's why if you want to make money from a blog, it has to be specific.

Let's say your hobby is photography. If you theme your blog on photography, your contextual ads will be related to photography, your affiliate products will be photography related, and the people coming to your site will be all about photography. That will equal quality traffic. People looking for photography topics online will find your blog and read your posts, and be much more likely to make you money.

Maybe your job is working at a jewelry store. You open a blog talking about jewelry, how to select it, what to look for, etc. Again, a focused blog, targeted traffic, quality traffic.

The trick then, is to theme your blog to something you enjoy, you can talk about, and most importantly, something specific. Don't be afraid to re-write and recycle articles or even find news articles on your topic to comment on in your blog. In the end, you'll end up making much more money from your advertising efforts than if you have an unfocused blog that discusses everything under the sun.

Remember, focus, patience and discipline will get you the cash.
