Traditionally, showers have been celebrations thrown and attended by female family and friends for a soon to be new mommy, but times they are a changing. Dads want to be in the picture a lot more than they use to, and with more single men and gay couples adopting, there might not be a mommy at all.

And speaking of adoption, the new addition might not be a brand new baby, but a toddler, child or even teenager. Age shouldn't affect the desire to celebrate the arrival or the benefit of showering the parent(s) with things they will need to welcome the latest arrival to their family.

An ancient proverb states, "It takes a whole village to raise a child," and in today's world friends and relatives make up this village. We can support the children in our lives by commemorating their arrival with a party and showering the new family with gifts.

Planning a non-traditional shower is not that different from planning any type of party. Choose a date that is convenient for the guest of honor and that will allow as many others to participate as possible. Find a location that is convenient. A home can make a good venue as could a favorite restaurant or even the break room if the party will be held during work hours.

Shower games are a fun way to pass the time, and there are many that cater to mom's and dad's. The idea is to just have fun and enjoy each other's company.

We live in an ever changing world where fads and fashion go as fast as they come. But what doesn't change is the desire for a family and the need to have and care for children. Each new arrival gives us all a reason to hope for a brighter future and must be acknowledged and celebrated.
