While there are many different candidates, one you should absolutely consider is the butterfly bush. As its name indicates, it is intrinsically related to the attraction of butterflies.

Does this mean that you shouldn't consider other plants? No, you should. But if you compare the various options in terms of how attractive they are to butterflies, and how easy they are to plant and keep alive, the butterfly bush is almost always hands down the winner.

If you are not an experienced gardener, these bushes can be a bit intimidating to get started with. This can be especially true if you are dealing with a fairly small area and you need to make every plant, flower and shrub count.

Start by tilling the area where the bushes are going to go. Add some lime and add some compost, too. If you have natural compost available, use that. If not, consider picking some up from the local garden supply store. If there is a touch-and-go moment with butterfly bushes, it is at the beginning of their lives. It behooves you to get them started with lots of nutrients.

After you have planted them, be sure to give them plenty of water. After a few weeks, your bush should be doing just fine.

Avoid the temptation to buy many different varieties of the butterfly bush. You can get them in many different colors. But remember that butterflies are attracted to your garden because of colors that are bunched together. Don't get three different bushes of different colors. That will confuse the winged visitors you want to attract.

The only real challenge to growing a butterfly bush is that they have a tendency to proliferate. In other words, you will see a lot of them shooting up in the vicinity of the original plant. Trim these so that you don't have too many of them.

Successful butterfly gardeners look at their gardens from the perspective of butterflies. How will it work for them? Will it offer them shelter? Nutrients? A place to eat and breed? If you can answer yes to those questions then your butterfly garden is off to a fine start.

And butterfly bushes are a great way to ensure that your garden will be highly desirable to butterflies. You'll get other visitors too - hummingbirds, for example. Bees of course. But a thriving butterfly bush or two should almost guarantee you several species of garden before the season is out.
