How to Prepare Your Home for Winter

Winter is a time of snow, cold weather, and holidays

. While this season can be enjoyable, it does require some preparation. There are a few chores in particular that are necessary to prepare one's home for winter.

The first thing homeowners must do is make sure that their heating systems are adequately maintained and ready for the season. Winter temperatures can be uncomfortable or even dangerous if the home is not kept warm. Checking to be sure that the heating system is working correctly can save one a lot of time and discomfort once the temperature drops. In many cases it is much more efficient to hire a professional to check the system, since some problems may not be easily recognized by the homeowner. The filters and vents should be thoroughly cleaned, and any repairs should be taken care of before the temperature inside and outside the home becomes too chilly.

Another aspect of keeping the home warm is ensuring that the house is weather-proofed. Even the most efficient heating system will not be as effective if there is a severe draft. Replacing any damaged weather stripping and caulking around any windows and trim can greatly reduce the amount of cold air coming into the house. It is also a good idea to replace any damaged roofing or shingles as this type of damage can let in wind or even melting snow and rain.

Finally, one should be well-stocked with winter supplies. Weather can be unpredictable, and waiting to buy these supplies until it snows can cause a lot of inconvenience. A snow shovel will allow one to create a path through the snow or even dig out a vehicle if necessary. Rock salt is a great safety measure, since it can remove ice from walking paths. If intending to use a fireplace, it is a good idea to have a supply of firewood stored in a dry place. Supplies for one's vehicle should be kept inside the home or vehicle. An ice scraper will help one increase windshield and window visibility when there is frost without having to wait for it to thaw. Vehicles that are not four-wheel drive or those that do not handle well on ice should be equipped with snow tires and possibly sand bags in the case of larger vehicles.

These preparations will help ensure that one will be ready for winter. This can make this season much more pleasant to the house's occupants. Having the home prepared for winter can give a family a warm, comfortable place able to withstand snow and cold temperatures.
