How to Prevent Yeast Infection? Boost Your Immune System!

If you are currently suffering from a yeast infection, or have had one in the past, let's focus for a moment on the larger picture: the relationship between our immune system and yeast infections in general.

Our immune system is literally our 'bodyguard'. Like an army, it fights daily to protect us from being conquered from the constant onslaught of 'bad' fungi, bacteria and viruses. When the human body is functioning as designed, our immune system identifies and kills those organisms that would do us harm.

Without becoming overly technical, our immune system consists of two parts:

1 leukocytes (white blood cells)

2 lymphoid tissues: the bone marrow, thymus, spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes.

Lymphoid tissues are where the WBC's (white blood cells) develop and live. WBC's are the warriors that go to battle and kill the enemy - those unwelcome, invading organisms that would otherwise sicken or kill us.

Vaginal yeast infections are known as 'opportunistic infections'. This means that if the immune system was working properly, the Candida albicans (the fungus that causes a yeast infection) would not present a problem for us. Under normal circumstances, this fungus actually lives quite peacefully in our mouth and intestinal tract.

When our immune system becomes compromised, however, it cannot effectively continue to fight off all of the body's invaders. Bacteria, fungi and viruses can overpopulate, and an infection such as a yeast infection, can easily set in.

The probability of contracting an illness such as a yeast infection depends largely upon the wellness of our immune system. Like in battle, if our soldiers (WBC's) outnumber the enemy's soldiers, (bad bacteria, fungus, viruses) and if our soldiers are healthy and well rested, we stand a greater chance of winning the war of 'sickness'.

How can we improve our immune system health?

Basically when we choose to live healthier overall, our body's natural defense system will become healthier as well.

Three good ways to begin to boost our immune system health are:

1) Stop eating refined sugar. Sugar can alter our body's pH balance as well as weaken our immune system. If the thought of going without your daily dessert or caramel macchiato leaves you with the shakes, it's for good reason: many nutritionists consider refined sugar a drug because of its impact upon our bodies. Although not an easy task by any means, ridding yourself of this insidiously dangerous component of your diet will indeed leave you feeling more energetic, thinking more clearly, and possibly even lighter on the bathroom scales. And our friend Candida albicans? He loves to feed on excess sugar in our bodies. Let's stop feeding this little monster!

2) This next tip is something we've heard many times: drink plenty of water (preferably not from the tap). This is such an easy way to help your body cleanse itself of toxins. There are so few of us who truly drink adequate amounts of water.

3) Make fresh lemons a part of your diet. Filled with vitamin C, lemons also are a great way to help restore your body's natural pH balance. When your pH is out of kilter (more acidic than it should be, for instance) Candida albicans easily multiply and can create havoc inside us.

Consider the big picture when dealing with a yeast infection, or any illness, for that matter. Implementing just the three steps mentioned above will not only boost your immune system, but may also confine 'yeast infection' to one of your distant memories.
