How to Properly Eliminate Poor Behaviors in Your Dog

Even the best dog owners experience unwanted behaviors from their canine friends. It happens to all of us. Dogs aren't perfect and we can't expect them to be. The most commonly encountered problems with dogs and puppies are either jumping on people or escaping from the house or yard.

While some people think a puppy jumping up on you can be adorable, not everyone shares these sentiments. Plus, once the dog becomes a little bigger, jumping can get old very quickly. A heavy dog can easily knock a child over or an adult off their feet. It is a bad behavior which needs to be nipped in the bud.

The reason dogs jump on us is because they are excited and happy to see that person. Sometimes we are a little reluctant to discourage this cute behavior, but it is important to redirect that happiness in a more positive manner. Many well meaning owners sometimes unintentionally promote jumping by picking the puppy up or providing some other form of encouragement. This inconsistency is a problem. Everyone must be aware of and accept the importance of the dog training. If just one person allows the dog to jump up while others don't, the dog will just become confused and irritated. Proper dog training has to be firm and consistent yet kind and understanding in order for it to be effective.

You would never dream purposely allow your dog to roam the neighborhood on its own. So what makes an easy escapable backyard any different? Letting the dog to wander the neighborhood and the streets on its own is reckless, unsafe, and more than likely illegal. You could face some stiff fines if the police find your dog is found walking around the neighborhood unattended.

Of course sometimes that wandering dog is not the owner's idea, and many dogs perform amazing feats of escape when left on their own. The temptations for unattended dogs are many, including passing bicycles, joggers, children, cats and other dogs. It is much easier to prevent escapes than to recapture a loose dog, so let's talk about some preventative measures every dog owner can take.

The best way to deal with a dog that is dead set on escaping all the time is to get rid of the incentive to escape. An uninterested dog is much more likely to get into trouble or get out. Try surrounding your dog with things like lots of toys, dog beds, and plenty of fresh water. They will be more likely to spend their time contentedly sleeping or playing with those toys.
