How to Protect Your Home Security As A Single Mom

More and more women these days are finding themselves in the position of being single mothers

. For some women this is a choice they have decided that they do not need to find Mr. Right to start the family that they had always dreamed of. They choose to adopt or find other alternative ways to start a family. But many women find themselves as single moms unexpectedly, perhaps after a divorce or a death, or due to a partner who skipped town long ago.

Being a single mom in American society can pose a number of unique challenges, one of which is protecting one's home security. Though having an adult man in the house is certainly no guarantee against robbery or assault, sometimes it can feel that way. Being the only adult the house especially when your child or children are there, too, counting on you to protect them can feel like an enormous responsibility, especially when you are not even sure of your ability to defend yourself!

The good thing to remember is that single women are just as capable of ensuring their families personal and home security as men and married couples are. Unless your ex-husband was an ex-marine or a body builder, he was probably no match for whatever crazed lunatic would try to break into your house so you should not fear just because you are now on your own.

That said, there are a number of steps that every parent should take to ensure their home security and protect their children from the pain of having to suffer a crime and losing their sense of security. Read these tips and protect your home today!

1. Install a quality home alarm system.

Home alarms used to be considered a suburban luxury, provenance of the ultra wealthy or the paranoid. But now they are all but required. If you do not have one of these devices, your house is fair game for any opportunistic robber. These days, home security systems are inexpensive and come with a variety of features that you can tailor to your individual needs. If you have a home in a relatively relaxed place, like in rural Michigan, for example, you may assume that you cannot experience the kinds of crimes that those who live in big cities face. But isolated homes are often great targets for burglars, so you can never be too careful.

2. Lock your doors regularly.

Some people do not lock their doors unless they are on vacation. But never underestimate the sheer gall of criminals to check out of a door is locked and just let themselves in to rifle through your stuff. It has happened before, and it will happen again. So lock your door at night, when you go to the grocery store, when you are upstairs taking a shower.

3. Tell a neighbor when you are out of town.

Even if you are not particularly close to anyone on your block, you should let your neighbors know if you are planning to be away for a weekend. This way, if they see a couple of men loading your flat screen TV into a white van at 11PM on a Friday night, they will know to call the police!
