2. Plan your meals a week at a time and then shop once for all the ingredients needed. This prevents last minute stops to the grocery store where you may be tempted to pick up some junk foods.

3. Don't ever skip breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it satisfies the body's need for food after a long fast throughout the night. Eating breakfast revs your metabolism and prepares your body for burning calories all day long.

4. Drink a protein shake for breakfast. Protein satisfies body hunger and jumpstarts your metabolism.

5. Eat at least 5 small meals a day. Eating every 2-3 hours keeps your body's metabolism running high with no chance of storing fat. Watch food portion sizes.

6. Eat at least 3 servings of fruit a day, preferably fresh. Do not drink fruit juice, even pure juices, because fruits are loaded with natural sugars that also add calories. One half cup of juice equals one serving of fruit.

7. Eat at least 4-5 servings of vegetables a day, preferably fresh. Steamed vegetables that retain some crunch are also acceptable. Vegetables are a good way to increase dietary fiber without worrying about calories.

8. Drink a minimum of 6-8 glasses of water a day. Water flushes toxins out of the body. Make sure the water is ice cold. Your body will burn more calories heating the water to body temperature.

9. Instead of coffee in the morning, have a cup of green tea to speed up your metabolism naturally. Green tea is also high in antioxidants.

10. Take the time to look your best every day. Avoid extra large clothes that camouflage your body. The point here is to stay motivated to lose weight by feeling sexy and comfortable.

11. Avoid creamy salad dressings. Try lemon juice or balsamic vinegar with olive oil instead. Olive oil is heart healthy.

12. Try adding spices to your meals such as: cayenne pepper, ginger, chili or hot sauce. The extra spice increases the body's metabolism for about 3 hours.

13. Join a weight loss support group to find the motivation and support of others trying to lose weight.

14. Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes. This also increases metabolism and helps to lift your spirits.

15. Try to incorporate some weight bearing exercises into your routines at least 3 times a week. Building muscles increases metabolism which burns calories for the rest of the day.

16. Consume the right amount of fiber every day. If you are not getting the required amount from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, then try sprinkling bran on your salads, in soups, or on yogurt. Fiber helps to transport fats out of our body by keeping our bowels regular. Fiber also helps us to feel full and therefore suppresses the feeling of hunger.

17. Eat cup of almonds or walnuts during snack time, once a day. Although nuts are high in fat (although heart healthy), they also provide lots of protein.

18. Instead of turning to food for comfort, seek support by calling a friend, going for a walk, reading a book, listening to your favorite music, or sipping a cup of tea.


19. Meditation helps to release negative thoughts. Listen to soothing music while focusing on your breath and clearing your mind of any thoughts.

20. Sleep at least 8 hours daily.
