First, transfer as much money as you can into a savings account each month. The best way to do this is by setting up an automatic transfer from your checking to savings account. You can pick a small set amount to ensure that you are saving each month. If you have any additional income at the end of the month, then you can transfer that over, too.

Next, consider working overtime at your current job if that is an option. Most hourly workers can earn significant extra income if their employers allow them to pick up additional time or to cover for other employees. If overtime is not an option, then you might look into getting a second job. This can be a temporary source of income, such as tutoring or baby-sitting, or another hourly position.

You can also sell some of your used and unwanted items in order to gain funds for your new purchase. There are many online auction sites that will allow you to upload a photo and a description of your item in order to sell it with ease.

Make sure that you review your current budget to look for additional ways to save up for your splurge. For example, you might cut back on eating out and other discretionary spending. If you know that you have a goal in mind, then this makes it easier to save on short-term, quick gratification items.

Once you have begun to save and are coming closer to meeting your goal, make sure that you research the product in detail to get the best price. Keeping these tips in mind will help you save faster so that you can buy the item you have been wanting.
