Satin is simply a kind of weave, while silk is an actual fabric. So a satin silk sheet can be weaved to have a luxurious finish to it, but it is not actually silk. Therefore, you will want to look for labels that disclose the sheets are made from 100% silk.

Once you understand the difference between satin and silk, it is time to start determining the quality of the silk sheets in question.

Possibly the most important thing you will be looking for is the momme weight of the silk. Silk is an extremely fine fabric and is therefore measured in momme. The momme is the actual weight of the silk used to make the sheet, and a momme weight of 19 is ideal. The lower the number, the thinner the sheets and a lesser amount of silk has been used. You will also want to take into account the thread count, which should be at least 400 or above. This will ensure you are buying high quality silk sheets that will be quite durable.

You also need to keep in mind that there are differences between the two types of silk, cultivated and wild. Cultivated silk is more expensive, but in turn it is also of much higher quality. Sheets made of cultivated silk will be much more durable and in general much softer than those made of wild silk.

Finally you should be aware of if the sheets are machine washable or not. Many silk sheets today can be cleaned in a standard washing machine, but you must be sure to check the label before purchasing the sheets.

Buying silk sheets can be quite expensive and the learning curve is more difficult than simply going out to buy normal bedding sheets. However, the first time you sleep on your new silk sheets, you will never want to go back to normal bedding ever again!
