Most people who merely want to "sell stuff" rummage through their attic or basement looking for things they don't use. While I'm not saying this strategy doesn't work short term, it's not the way to build a long term business.

Sooner or later you are going to run out of things to market; if you want a "business", you need a method of consistently finding profitable products to get your hands on long term.

First, here is strategy few are talking about for how to sell stuff on eBay: arbitrage. Certainly, arbitrage is a well known method.

In the stock market, this is where you look for stocks that are undervalued in certain markets; you then buy them and turn around and unload them in the market where they are overvalued. You only make a small profit with each sale, and the key to this business is high volume.

For instance, if you see that Microsoft stock in Japan is retailing for 2/8 of its' price in Los Angeles, you would buy it and then immediately unload it in Los Angeles for a profit. Arbitrage is most famous for being used with the stock market but it can really be used in many different business models, including eBay.

Remember, this is a discount website, and things go for less here than many other locations. Therefore, if you know that one item is worth more than it's currently going for on eBay, you can then buy the product and either retail it again on eBay with a better auction or somewhere else for more money.

Somewhere else could mean your own website, the newspaper, Craigslist, among others. The opposite of this is to purchase things selling cheaply offline and then sell them on eBay, which also works.

There is a ton of money to be made with arbitrage and if you play your cards right, you can cash in big time. However, beware that this strategy requires a lot of risk, and you really have be great at finding underselling items in order to be profitable. If not it could blow up in your face.

Of course, there are other ways to sell stuff on eBay and turn a big profit. Buying wholesale or drop shipped items and then putting them on eBay is the one that gets the most amount of attention, and this is the way I would recommend long term.

I would recommend wholesale when looking to sell stuff on eBay, since the prices are better and you have a wider profit margin than drop shipping, although it requires a lot more work.
