How to Speed Up and Fix Your Slow Computer

Defragment Hard Drive

Files on a computer get cluttered, which causes the computer's performance to decline. Disc Defragmenter will take all files that are alike and put them together, which will in turn speed the computer up. To run the program, navigate to Start >All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disc Defragmenter. It will take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple hours to complete. This task should be performed at least once a month.

Disable unneeded start-up programs

Over the lifespan of a computer, many programs get installed and many will load up when your computer boots, which will greatly decline both speed and performance. To disable unneeded programs, navigate to Start > Run. In the command box type "msconfig". This will launch the System Configuration program. Click on the Startup tab and then browse through the programs and uncheck all that you don't use regularly. For this step to take effect, you must restart the computer after hitting the Apply button.

Remove spyware/adware

Spyware is software that obtains information off of a computer without the user's knowledge. Sounds dangerous doesn't it? Luckily, there are free tools available that will rid this software from your computer. A good program to use is called Spybot Search and Destroy. Search for it in your favorite search engine and download from the official site. After this is completed, run the program to remove all of the spyware from your computer. This will not only protect your safety, but greatly increase your computer's speed. This should be repeated every few weeks.

Remove Junk Files

The simple way to remove these files is to open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options and click the Delete button. This will remove all of the cookies and history that your computer saves to your hard drive and greatly improve your computers performance.About the Author:
