How to Succeed – Advice that you Won't Get from Harvard, Yale or Oxford

If you want to be a huge success, don't ever work another day in your life

. Work is boring, it's tedious and worst of all, no worthwhile success is ever achieved through hard work. It's been tried by millions of people and it never worked. If you want to succeed big time, don't work; play.

Two decades ago I was at a seminar listening to Dr. David Singer explaining that our work should be fun. I can still see and hear him banging his fist on the lectern and chanting, "This has got to be fun. This has got to be fun." One of the best advices I ever received.

The difference between working and playing is determined by the amount of pleasure and joy that we get out of anything that we do. It's a question of personal taste and attitude. What is hard and tedious for one person may be fun and a game for someone else.

Generally speaking, lifting heavy loads is not considered to be much fun however don't ever tell that to a power lifter or a bodybuilder. They just love it and as far as they are concerned, it's a sport that they love to practice. It is said that Donald Trump has not taken more than a three-day vacation in over two decades. He loves wheeling and dealing over twelve hours a day. Wild horses could not drive him away from business. Proof positive that almost anything can be fun and game.

If we want to excel and succeed at whatever it is that we do, we have to love it and be passionate about it. For some people, that may come naturally but others may have to work at it. A task that may not be as formidable as it appears at first sight. Unless we absolute hate whatever it is that we do for a living, there's always a way that we can get to love it and become passionate about it.

The first thing that needs to be done to get passionate about what it is that we do is to give it importance and significance. That's the ultimate secret. When we feel that we are involved in something important, something that really matters and makes a difference it gives us a feeling of importance and relevance.

Feeling important is a basic human need and whatever we do to get that feeling is done with enthusiasm and passion. It's not work; it's play. The quest to achieve importance and relevancy is what motivates the great achievers. It's what gets them up early in the morning and keeps them fired up until late at night. It's the ultimate Muse whose call cannot be denied.

Shakespeare said, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Quality is not inherently attached to anything. Quality is purely subjective. We are the ones who determine the value level of anything. That is done through perception and perception can be modified by altering the sub-modalities.

In other words, by changing the perspective from which we appraise anything, we can change our conclusion and perception. A drop of water might seem meaningless at first sight but when we stop and look at what water represent we soon come to the conclusion that we are facing one of nature's greatest miracle.

It is the same with whatever it is that we do to earn a living. At first sight it may look inconsequential but further investigation might reveal a complete different story. A sprint runner might be simply someone who can run faster than others but it can also be seen as someone who can bring honor and pride to his country.

The road to success is paved with passion and enthusiasm. Those emotions can best be found while playing and enjoying ourselves. So, the first thing that must be done in our quest for success is to find a way of really enjoying what it is that we do for a living. That is done by attaching importance to our life's work. They don't teach that at Harvard, Yale or Oxford. But that's the way it is.
