How to Take Good Care of Your Car & Prevent it from Losing its Sale Value

After you've payed thousands of dollars for a good car, it certainly makes sense to look after it. So how can you retain a favourable sales value and make sure you don't lose too much on the deal?

Well, the first tip is to service your car every year. Someone looking to buy your car will want to make sure that everything is in working order and that there are no underlying problems that need to be fixed. Having your car serviced each year should prevent a build-up of problems. If smaller issues are not dealt with, larger ones are sure to follow as a direct result.

Secondly, make sure to be careful of where you park your car. Picture this: It's a windy day, you're at the supermarket and the only place you can find near the entrance is a very tight space with cars on either side. You take it. You then return to your car to find a massive dent in your door. Thankfully most dents can be successfully repaired; however some can leave permanent marks, which will obviously decrease your car's re-sale value.

Don't smoke in the car. This can really stink out a car's interior, and once smoke gets into a car's fabric, it is almost impossible to remove it. You can also get burn marks on the seats due to hot cigarette ash. If you go to a used car garage, you will notice a significant difference in price between a car that has had a non-smoker owner, and the same car that was owned by a smoker.

Remember to keep an eye on your windscreen wiper blades. If these are damaged, they could end up scratching your windscreen and affecting the driver's visibility. It's important that windscreen repairs are carried out by a professional in order to get a good price for your car when you're ready to sell it. If the windscreen wipers don't remove water in one go, they may need replacing. In winter, make sure you turn the wipers off when you've turned off the ignition, because in extremely cold weather they could freeze. If the wipers start immediately once you start up the car and they become frozen you could damage the wiper motor, which would again mean you'd need to replace it.

Finally, clean the car regularly to keep it in good condition. This goes without saying, but if you want to get a good price for your car, it's going to have to look clean and shiny on the outside (and tidy on the inside). The best way to do this is to clean it regularly. Some people leave their cars outside as they don't have access to a garage and then end up getting a build-up of old leaves on the roof of the car, which, if not tended to, can result in stained car paint. This is because sap and resin is released from the decomposing leaves, creating a stain on (and even through) the clear coat. Try washing this away with some dishwashing liquid diluted in water and use a specially made car brush to scrub it off.
