How to Tell a Story That Gets Attention

Everyone has been at a conference or ceremony where the speaker just was not a powerful storyteller and attempting to follow them was virtually impossible. When someone knows how to tell a story, they take the listener on a journey with them, seeing what they saw, feeling what they felt, and experiencing every event along the way.

For many, storytelling comes as a gift, but for those who aren't born as natural storytellers, there are some tricks that can help them to tell stories that get attention.

* Know your story well. Nothing can turn an audience off faster than a storyteller stumbling over their words or leaving out crucial bits of the plotline. Memorize every detail before attempting to relay the tale.

* Be descriptive. You want to paint a picture for the listeners, giving them as much information as possible to allow them to have the full effect of the story and visualize it in their mind, as it unfolds.

* Leave out unimportant details. While using a lot of description and adjectives is important, stuffing a story with irrelevant information can make it drawn out and quite boring for the listener.

* Practice often. While you may think you know your story well, until you have practiced telling it aloud to someone, you really can't know if it is effective. Ask for their feedback and make adjustments where they are necessary.

* Always be confident in front of an audience. Whether one person or a thousand are listening to your story, tell it with confidence and authority. This will give you credibility and keep your listeners captivated.

While not everyone is born with the gift of storytelling, it is a skill that can also be learned with practice. Begin by telling tales to loved ones and work up to a more diverse audience. Once you learn how to tell a story and have experienced the reaction of your audience when it is done properly, it can almost be addicting and you will find yourself searching for new stories and new audiences to tell them to.
