How to Wear the Latest Designer Sunglasses

Summer 2011 is expected to go back to basics with designer sunglasses. No rhinestones, gaudy colors, or ornate frames are in. Instead, classic frames in neutral tones are appropriate for both sexes. A splash of color, however, does not hurt on some occasions. If you are gearing up your wardrobe for the warmer weather and need some accessories, consider these tips.

Always have at least one neutral look in your wardrobe. Styles that last appeared in the 1980s, such as clubmaster, wayfarer, and aviator sunglasses, are back in, and all can go two ways: fully black or with colored frames. No matter which style fits your face shape best, have one in all black, or black and mirrored. This way, no matter what you decide to wear, your designer sunglasses will blend right in with your look.

But which style should you choose? If you're a woman, this was a no-brainer for the past decade: oversized or bust. Although a shield look offers the same coverage, the rounded frames and gradient lenses of oversized sunglasses were the go-to pair of shades for every girl. Rounded styles, however, do not compliment all face shapes. Those with rounded faces should steer clear of oversized designer sunglasses, while women with angular or square-shaped visages should own a pair in black or mock tortoise.

If you have a round face, what can you wear? Look for any pair of designer sunglasses that gives your features more definition. Angles typically do this, and wayfarers and cat eye sunglasses may be what you need. Although rounded at the corners, wayfarers are a style composed primarily of lines, while cat eye styles run from angular and slightly rounded to rigidly geometric.

What if you want to have some fun with your eyewear? Once you have picked out a pair of neutral designer sunglasses, you can find a brighter style that will pop out. Be careful, though. Sunglasses, unlike a handbag or shoes, should not be the center of your outfit. Wayfarers and clubmasters, in particular, are ideal for adding a hint of color. Even with dark lenses, both styles come in nearly every color imaginable: red, turquoise, neon yellow, pink, or any shade you can think of.
