How to become a beekeeper practical advice
The raising of bees in a controlled manner in a hive with an aim to gather the honey is known as beekeeping. It is one of the most out of the box hobby that one can choose, but it is a great hobby. If you can do it properly following all guidelines, you can turn to beekeeping as a source of income as it has proved to be a profitable business. However, to start off, you need to know some basics about beekeeping. And in beekeeping, the basics actually comprises of most of the things that you need to know about it and that is a lot of knowledge indeed.
You need some equipment up first to get started with beekeeping. The fundamental works of a hive are among the first things that you will require to get started. Usually, beekeepers who have been into beekeeping for a while start their business by purchasing an established bee colony and packaged bees. But for a beginner, it is a good choice to start with packaged bees. A protective gear, bee source and some equipment for handling the honey are the rest of the things that you require to start off with.
The thing with honey bees is that they do not attack you unless you threaten the existence of their hive along with their existence. Protective gear for beekeepers is available in stores all over the country. When you are looking to extract honey from the hive, your best friend is smoke. A smoker is what you actually need when you are at it. If you use the smoker on a bee hive, the bees in that hive will quickly evacuate the hive and make way for you to remove the honey. Bees respond to smoke like they respond to fire.
Now, the most important thing about honey bees is that they stick together. These insects stay in a colony which usually comprises of thousands of bees. They work together to build their hive, maintain their young members and collect food for themselves and the hive. Beekeepers need to have certain instincts to be able to remove the honey from the hive perfectly.
Removing honey from a bee hive is quite dangerous if done without protective gear and proper equipment. It can be best described as an art. The most important thing to keep in mind when one is removing honey from a bee hive is do not keep the honey in the hive for too long after the bees have departed. This will make the honey darker, and although it does not affect the taste of the honey, buyers prefer to purchase light colored honey. From a beekeepers point of view, it is important to remove the honey quickly from the hive, otherwise, the bees will not be able to store honey in that hive anymore. Another important aspect is to harvest the honey at the correct time, i.e. when you notice wax caps appearing over the honey cells. Hives are best harvested on a sunny day when most of the bees are busy elsewhere.
Another important thing you should take note of is whether the authorities in charge of your place of residence permit beekeeping in the area. Beekeeping is one of the most satisfying hobbies around and if you are brave enough, do give it a try!
