For example if you wanted to rank a website on digital cameras then I would register to a photography forum and have a signature that pointed back to my website. Not only would this give me a valuable backlink every time I posted but it would also bring some traffic my way from people interesting in my website,
Blog Comments
Most blogs give you the opportunity to leave your name when you comment along with your website address. Adding your keywords into the name field along with your URL back to your website will give you a valuable backlink. One tip I would give is to actually read the post and give valuable feedback, if your acting like a spammer chances are the webmaster won't approve your comment.
Article Marketing
My favourite is article marketing. You can write about anything you want and it doesn't need to be to do with the subject that you want to rank for, you simply add this link into your signature giving you a valuable link from such a high source website. Article marketing is also a useful way of driving traffic to your website.
