How to change your PS3 Nat type 3 to Nat type 2

The Playstation Network is renowned for being simple and easy to use, in effect, you just connect your PS3 to the internet and play. However, their are several annoying problems that some gamers experience. Perhaps the most common network problem on thePS3 is the Nat type problem. If your PS3 has Nat type 3, you may experience matchmaking issues on popular titles such as Call Of Duty and Fifa.

This problem can be easily solved. If you have not made any ajustments to the configuration of your network router, the chances are your PS3 will have Nat Type 3. The Nat Type of your PS3 can be easily checked. Head over to the "Network Settings" tab on the XMB, and perform an internet connection test.

If the internet connection test tells you that you have a Nat Type 3, you will need to make some adjustments to both your PS3 and your router.

Step 1 Static IP

First you will need to set up your PS3 to have a static IP address. This means turning off DHCP and assigning your PS3 a single, static IP address. Before you start this process, you will need to make note of your PS3s current settings. To do this, on the XMB, go to "Network settings," and then "Internet connection settings." From here note your current IP address, your subnet mask, your default router and primary and secondary DNS settings. Write these down, you will need them in the following steps.

Now go to "Network Settings," then "Internet connection settings." Here select "custom," and then "Manual." This is where you will need to refer back to the Network settings you wrote down earlier. You will have to enter in the static IP Address you want to assign to your PS3, the Subnet Mask (which is usually 255.255.255.0), the default router (the IP address of your router, most often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.100.1), and the Primary and Secondary DNS settings. Once you have all of the settings entered, press X to save them.

Step 2 Configure your Router

In addition to making those changes on your PS3, you will also have to make some adjustments to the configuration of your router. On a PC in your network, type your router's IP into the URL box. This is usually 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1. Next open up the following ports for your PS3; TCP 80, 443, 5223 and UDP 5223, 3478, 3479, 3658. Once you have forwarded these ports, it's a good idea to reset your router to make sure that the new configuration is correctly applied.

Now, head over to your PS3 and perform another internet connection test. Your PS3 should now tell you that you have a Nat Type 2.
