How to choose a men's leather wallet

Are you in need of a new wallet? Or are you looking for a special gift for a male friend or family member this Christmas? Let me talk you through everything you need to know to choose the perfect men's leather wallet.

Men's wallets can be made from many different materials. You've already made one good choice by opting for leather. Leather is not only a very attractive material it is also very durable. If well looked after, a leather wallet can last for years. Furthermore, for some vintage styles, the leather can look even better with age.

What particular leather you go for is usually determined by the kind of quality you are looking for. Full grain leather is the thickest and most hardwearing type of leather because it has been processed the least. Due to the relatively natural state of the leather, it may also vary slightly in colour and pattern. Split grain leather is not as high quality as full grain leather. The hide is split into layers. The top layer is known as top grain leather and the bottom layers are known as split leather. Like full grain leather, top grain leather has a natural grain pattern and may vary slightly in colour. However, as the leather is thinner it may not last as long. Split leather does not have a pattern of its own. This is usually embossed onto the leather. This kind of leather is the least durable.

As for the style, wallets are available in check book, ID, bifold and trifold styles. Bifold and trifold are the most popular. Bifold wallets are usually flatter than trifold wallets but are generally larger in size. Trifold wallets are smaller but have more credit card slots. Check book wallets are large enough to carry a standard sized check book. The disadvantage is that this type may be easy for pickpockets to spot. You will need to think carefully about what you will use your wallet for and how many card slots you will need.

Once you have chosen and purchased your wallet, you will need to make sure that you take good care of it. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and keep it away from water or anything else that could stain it. If your wallet does become damp simply wipe it gently with a cloth. If your wallet becomes stained you could try a leather cleaner and conditioner, available from department stores, supermarkets or your local shoe shop. If you maintain your leather wallet, it should last you for years.
