How to choose bridesmaids dresses to impress

Your wedding day might be your chance to shine, but that doesn't mean you don't want the whole wedding party to look great. While there's only so much you can do when it comes to your guests, your bridesmaids are a different matter. However, making sure your bridesmaids look good, are happy and complement your theme without outshining you can be a tricky task indeed. Luckily, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can employ to ensure you don't find yourself regretting your choice of bridesmaid's dresses - or your choice of bridesmaids themselves.

One of the first things you need to establish when choosing dresses for your wedding party is whether you will be paying for them or whether you will expect everyone to chip in. Traditionally, bridesmaids were dressed by the couple being married, but these days many people ask their bridesmaids to pay for their outfits themselves. While this can save the bride a lot of money, it can also become a point of contention when it comes to choosing the dresses - as bridesmaids are more likely to want to make sure if they are paying for the dresses they like them and may wear them again. It's a good idea to bear this in mind when planning your colours and styles, to avoid disappointment or hurt feelings closer to the time.

Other major considerations are the age of your bridesmaids. If all of your bridesmaids are young, frilly princess dresses may be just the thing, but if they are older it's wise to sit them all down and get a good idea of the types of dresses they prefer. Obviously, the final choice is yours, it's your special day after all, but you could even find that you prefer the chance to talk about their ideas or are so keen on some suggestions that your mind is completely changed from your original idea.

If you have a range of different ages and body shapes, it might be a good idea to ask your bridesmaids whether they would like to dress in the same colour, but all choose a different cut and style of dress. This means people can wear a shape and design that flatters them, while helping you keep control of the colour scheme.

While it can be nice to choose bridesmaid dresses that have a similar cut or style to your wedding dress, it's far more important to make sure everyone is happy and an overall harmony is achieved - and this is possible with a huge variation in individual style.
