Whilst sitting down your spine needs to keep its natural curved position which is like an S shape. Chairs which do not encourage this position can cause pressure on the spine. This can lead to back pain and even slipped discs. Bad posture also causes strain and tension in other areas such as the neck, and pelvic muscles. Straining the neck can cause headaches and lead to eye strain which makes it more difficult to perform to the best of our ability in the workplace.
There are a number of points which should be checked before deciding on a chair.
A headrest should be employed to prevent neck muscles from stiffening
The back of the chair should allow the S shape of the spinal column to be formed and supported. A comfortable back rest will prevent slumping and reduce stress on the spine and pelvis.
The angle between the thighs and torso should be approximately 90 105 degrees. The back of the seat should be slightly raised to support the pelvis from tipping backwards and reduce pelvic stress.
The length and width of the thigh should be fully supported. The thigh should run parallel to the floor.
The seat cushion should be rounded downward in a waterfall shape allowing the thighs freedom of movement and permitting unhindered bending.
Feet should easily and comfortably rest flat on the floor.
A chair which allows you to sit in the correct position is a crucial step towards reducing back pain and improving posture. You can also arrange your desk so that you are mostly looking straight ahead, which allows you to maintain good posture while sitting.
