Dog coats are often a subject of ridicule, with many people having a chuckle if pooch passes done up in a duffle coat or wearing a frilly fleece. But is there a more serious side to dog coats? Might they actually serve a purpose, or are they just another accessory item allowing people to further spoil their pets and make them look silly in the process?

Winter is coming, it's getting colder and there is even a frost some mornings. We don't hesitate to put on our coat, and wrap up with hat and scarf. But what about our four-legged friends? It's easy to see them with their fur coat and think that they must be lovely and toasty but is that really the case?

Adjusting the thermostat

When it gets colder, we put the heating on and wear extra layers. For our furry friends who share our homes they benefit from the heating, and get used to the warmer climate. Just as we will then feel the cold more than if we had equally chilly homes, our dogs will feel the same except that they don't always have the extra layers available in their wardrobes to dress up against the cold.

There have been those who have taken dressing up their pets a little too far. With outfits with fairy wings, and even pretend jeans there are some people out there who are quite happy to turn their canine into a walking controversy.

A dog coat doesn't have to look daft, and there some functional yet flattering items available. Simple coloured fleeces will help ward off a chill, and won't draw the attention of the fashion police!

How to choose a dog coat

When buying leads, harnesses or coats, the main priority has to be the pooch that will end up wearing it. Many places may not allow you try on the garments, and for online purchases you don't want to end up sending things back so it is always best to measure your dog first.

Once you find a coat that is the right size, take a good look at the seams and stitching, especially where it could potentially rub. You want to avoid anything which is sharp or rough as this could lead to irritation for your dog.

Materials

There are various materials available for dog coats, ranging from waterproofs to fleeces and Hi-Vis coats. Waterproofs can be a little hot, as often the coat will not let the dog's skin breathe, which can cause him to sweat.

Fleeces are good as they help keep your dog warm and there are now non-pill fleeces which will not bobble and can quickly and easily be washed and dried. Hi-Vis coats are ideal if you walk at night along roads or lanes where there are no pavements, as it keeps you safe and keeps your dog warm.

A dog coat can make all the difference between a wearied walk, and a waltz in a winter wonderland.
