How to create unique Asian (Japanese Kanji) character appliqués and iron-on patches?

1. Set Windows' language bar to "Japanese".

2. Bring up a font type that supports Japanese (I used MS Gothic) in Embird Font Engine or whatever font digitizing software you're using. If you don't have Font Engine, you can always draw it one line at a time. If you want to skip this step, I have digitized files available on my website.

3. Load the embroidery file on your machine.

4. Hoop the stabilizer, towel, fabric of choice, and thin water soluble stabilizer. You can also stick on the towel on stabilizer with adhesives. I prefer to use a thin mesh water soluble stabilizer above the fabric, but depending on the material used, you may not need it.

5. Start embroidering the first straight stitch which outlines the letter. Definitely stop before the machine starts satin stitching. See below for picture.

6. Now the hard part. Cut the fabric around the letter. You will need two items, good cutting tools and patience.

7. Once you finish cutting around the letter, you can finish it with satin stitch.

8. You are pretty much done. Tare the stabilizer backing and wash the soluble stabilizer off on top.

9. If you are interested in making a patch, I recommend using a medium to heavy weight water soluble stabilizer as your backing material. So, your layers are constructed of: Water soluble stabilizer (one or two sheets), fabric, and light water soluble stabilizer.

10. Wash the finished product.

11. Once it is dry, then glue on the iron-on adhesive material and cut around the shape of the letter.

12. Finally, find a shirt or backpack that you want to put the appliqu. Peel off the paper backing (see in the picture) and iron-on. Here's one example of a sweat shirt.
