How to cure halitosis
What is Halitosis, and more to the point how do you treat it?
Halitosis is basically a breakdown of proteins by bacteria in the mouth and oesophagus. That said scientists think there are other possible causes, all of which will determine the necessary treatment.
What Causes Bad Breath?
The causes and subsequent treatment can be grouped. One groups relates to the mouth and includes dental decay, gum disease, food caught between teeth and not removed, a dry mouth, too much bacterial activity on the tongue or the back of the mouth, tonsil or throat infection and Catarrh.
A second group relates to the oesophagus and stomach, for example, Gastritis, reflux and food stagnation.
A third group concerns problems with the airway, normally as a result of illness. Causes could be Sinusitis, polyps, dryness of the mouth, hindered mucus or air flow, Bronchitis, Pneumonia and other infection of the bronchial tubes.
One of these causes Sinusitis is itself caused by an infection of the air-filled spaces in the bones of the skull opening into the nose. There are two pairs of paranasal sinuses, one lies in the cheeks and the other in the forehead.
Sinusitis can be either acute (short term) or chronic (long term). The acute version is normally the result of a cold.
General illness is often a pre-curser to bad breath so should not be ignored. However the underlying cause is not usually serious.
Treating Halitosis
You often are not aware you have bad breath unless you are told. If told while suffering from a bad cold, then you can solve the problem easily by treating the cold and chewing a mint flavoured sweet.
But if there is no apparent reason why you should have Halitosis, it is probably wise to consult your dentist. Don't disguise the fact you have bad breath though. Your dentist needs to examine you properly. Tooth decay may be the underlying reason.
If the dentist is unable to find a probable cause for the bad odour, then contacting you doctor is the next step. He or she may then advise that you attend a specialist bad odour' clinic. Other health professionals may also become involved if the case is serious.
Having continual bad breath can also be psychologically damaging for some. If you find this is causing you stress and anxiety, it is worthwhile consulting a psychological therapist. The latter will put the problem into perspective. While it is an unpleasant condition, it is rarely the pre-curser of something more damaging.
Treating Yourself
As intimated earlier the causes of Halitosis are many. But maintaining proper oral health will keep it at bay. The following tips should help.
1. Clean teeth properly and see a dentist regularly.
2. Clean the tongue as well as the teeth. There are now long tooth brushes available for just that purpose.
3. Make sure food isn't trapped between the teeth. Flossing, wood sticks or other inter-dental brushes can help.
4. Use a recommended dental mouthwash. The best time is before going to sleep.
5. Avoid drinking too much coffee.
6. Drink plenty of fluids. Dry mouths can cause a build up of bacteria in the oral cavity.
7. Clean your mouth and teeth after eating milk, fish and meat products.
8. Keep sugar-free gum handy. This stimulates the production of saliva.
9. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
10. Get your teeth cleaned professionally every now and again.
