Swollen eyelids are not a very serious condition in most cases but they are still one of the most distressing things to have to deal with on a day to day basis for the person suffering from it. Not only is it uncomfortable and makes one of the most sensitive parts of the human body sore and itchy it is also an eye sore and not a pretty sight for anyone to look at.

There are a few different reasons for a person to have swollen eyelids. Lets start with the most benign and harmless and work our way up to the most serious reasons for a person to have swollen and puffy eyelids.

The first condition is one called Blepharitis which is caused by bacteria in the glands under the eye lids. This may be due to other reasons as well such as an allergic reaction to something that you ate or a reaction to dandruff or an ingredient in eye makeup, many people for example react with puffy eyes when they eat shell fish.

Conjunctivitis is a very common eye infection that is mostly harmless and causes swelling and redness of the eyes and a feeling of itchiness along with increased tear production. Conjunctivitis normally last for no more than a few days.

Styes are a small pimple like boil at the base of an eyelash that is itchy and red and in many cases can be painful and cause discomfort. It is also caused by a certain kind of staphylococcus bacteria.

Edema is retention of fluids in the eye lids and it is once again an allergic reaction to a certain allergen in the environment like dandruff or pollen. Once again the symptoms are a swelling of the eyelids, redness and an itchiness of the area.

Dermatitis of the eye is a form of dermatitis or skin condition that is caused by allergies for the most part and is indicated by puffiness and redness of the eyelids and a sensation of burning and itchiness.

An eye tumour is one of the most serious causes of eyelid swelling even if the tumour is not malignant in nature. The tumour can adversely affect vision and can also spread to other areas of the eye.

Treatment for most of the causes of eyelid swelling is the mostly the application of a warm compression and a course of antibiotics tailored to the specific cause of the swelling.
