How to do an iMac Repair
After some years of use, the iMac computer has been known to have video failures
. This is usually the result of the analog going bad. Usually this is due to the flyback transformer (FBT) which is located on the analog board.
The FBT is what steps up the voltage necessary to cause the monitor to work and it contains very tightly, fine wires that are wound inside it to do this. The design of the Revision A through D iMacs doesn't permit sufficient air to flow around the FBT and it will often get hot, particularly if the iMac computer is used much in a location that has poor air circulation. When the FBT is too warm some of the insulation the wires in the FBT will melt and the result is an internal short. This results in an iMac computer that won't work.
After pressing the power button the iMac computer will start to boot but then seconds later it turns off. Usually, if you try it again, the same thing happens.
If your iMac computer, Revision A through D id exhibiting these symptoms you have some options get your iMac computer up and running again.
You can always use the iMac with an external monitor. You will have to have a monitor with the old Mac connector, 2 rows of 15 pins, or an adapter for a VGA monitor. However, you might get better resolution from your iMac if you use a better monitor than the one that comes with it. But, you do have to purchase another monitor.
You can move the innards of your iMac computer to another computer case. This means you would have to do some modifications. However, you will still have to have an external monitor and you would have to buy another case and possibly a new power supply.
Take the iMac computer to an authorized repair shop. This can be rather expensive since they will want to trade out the video and analog boards as opposed to repairing the analog board. There is also the possibility that the repair person mistakenly replaced the logic board which won't repair the problem.
You can replace the analog/video boards yourself if you can find the replacement parts. This is nearly as expensive as having it done because the boards are the expensive part of the repair.
You can repair the analog board yourself. There are repair procedures available on the Internet to do this. The parts are relatively inexpensive depending on where you order them from.
