[ watch Desert Flower online free ] Because Kebede is a bona-fide modelling star, she can project this part of Dirie's story with confidence and intensity. She really does eat up the camera, and is proof that the model-to- actor transition is not always a recipe for disaster.
But where Desert Flower really excels is in the handful of flashbacks to the trauma of Dirie's youth. One electrifying scene, in which Dirie learns that not all women have been "cut" like her, crackles with deep shock and sadness.
Later, in a series of images which are hard to watch and which are guaranteed to reduce you to tears, the full horror of what so many young African girls experience is revealed (while these scenes are harrowing, they are not, thankfully, too graphic).
One good thing to come out of Dirie's shocking experience was a wider awareness of the practice which has been outlawed in many countries as a result of her campaigning on behalf of the UN.
And despite Desert Flower's uneven tone and slightly confused chronology, raising further awareness is just one of many good reasons to see it.
