What is a DLL file?- A DLL stands for dynamic link library and as name indicates these files reside in windows library (Actual name of the folder is system (Me) or system32 most of the time) and they can be used dynamically i.e. when they are needed or calls by any program that is being executed. Earlier it used to come under name of .ini files i.e. the same functionality what a DLL performs today was getting done by .ini files but DLL file has replaced the .ini files completely. An advantage of DLL file is it does not get loaded into RAM with the main program so it saves space in RAM to the main program or function can run faster comparatively.
What does a DLL do? A DLL file lets the executable (EXE) communicate with a specific device such as a scanner or printer or may contain root source code to perform particular functions. Also a DLL contains code and data that can be used by more than one program at the same time. This means to reuse the same code or instruction set by different programs. For an example if a DLL performs an action of delete a file in this case all the programs that needed this feature will call this particular DLL file and it can be used by various functions. Remember a DLL is an executable file but it cannot be run alone that is it always will be run by an executable program or function. It seems as if a vehicle without an engine.

Generally newer versions of DLL files are backward compatible i.e. they will be fit for earlier versions of windows. And DLL files from Windows ME could be not compatible with Windows 98. Many Windows ME files work well on 98 but not all of them. The same is applicable and true in case of Windows XP and 2003. After that your slow PC turns into faster.
