Don't follow everybody. Check people first. General opinion that you should follow everybody blindly is wrong because there are loads of junk and spam on twitter and platform can't filter it by itself.

Follow more. This statement is correct but only if you are going to set daily rate of followings because too much could reveal you as a spammer. And that will be bad especially because more and more people use tools to find and determine who is original and who is hoax.

Stop following people who stop following you. If you notice somebody who stopped following you and you just added him that is the biggest sign you are dealing with a person whose prime agenda is to find fans. Usually these are artificial celebrities hungry of attention. Stop following them immediately and don't worry, you will not have problems because twitter has already find their activity. Professional hoaxers wait up to 2 weeks till they kick you out.

Follow people who follow spammers. These are either likeminded people or they auto follow. Whatever it is, it will help you to achieve number of followers. If you want quality followers than don't do this.

Follow people who have over 200 followers and who are situated in major cities with big population. First paragraph is because if they have 200 followers somebody is paying attention to them and two, major cities have almost always greater publicity.

Find top twitter users on social news watch and follow them. Don't just stalk on them, commend their twits, because they will, in the most cases answer you and you will be more involved.

Update your avatar and bio. The best choice is to put your own picture or logo which is going to represent you and add something meaningful with description about you and your main interests. Like skillful manager, company with international impact or experianced accountant and so on.

Involved in RT other people twits, use meaningful keywords, use hash tags to connect with people with similar interests and follow people who follow people like you.

Avoid communication with spammer. Simply block him or her and filter that person from your timeline. You can also report spam or report some other illegal activities using twitter help. Avoid using automation tools and purely feed for your twitter account. Don't sell crap over mail and you will get lots of followers. If you treat people like people and not just like names it will produce much deeper impact on your popularity than raw power of automation tools. Actually these things are good and can help you in million and one way but its important how you use them and how much, and in general, even less experienced users are running away from automation tools like from hell.
