How to find work for actors/actresses:
One of the most important things for an actor or an actresses career is to get your foot in the door, so to speak. Now quite a lot of people in the business use an agent, to call companies, arrange interviews etc... but for a lot of people just starting out this is not recomended as the cost for an agent would be greater than any income made from acting. However if you have been to university and have all the qualifications needed, this could be the most profitable way to promote your acting career, as agents know the business an can get interviews you wouldn't get yourself.
A good way to seek acting work would be to look for companies who deal with the specific acting you would like to do and contact them, by phone, letter, e-mail etc. explaining to them that your are just starting out but have a lot of confidence as an actor/actress and lots of passion, which you would bring to any role. Some people would see this as a benefit and, if they like you, they might be willing to give you a chance because they wouldn't have to pay you as much as someone who has been in the acting business for a while. This isn't a bad thing that you are not getting paid as much as it will offer you the oppertunity to start out in the acting business.
The best ways to approach an employer:
What an agent, working on behalf of an actor/actress, will do is, send a picture, which is usually a head shot depending on the type of role, attached to a bio or profile which has information of the actor/actress. The information would include personal details, name, age etc...and also any other information which might be useful inc, any experience, qualifications and any other information that might be connected to the types of acting roles offered. Once you've supplied your profile to future acting employers keep contacting them on quite a regular basis, to see if they have any new positions avaliable, that way it saves them time.
What credentials will I need?:
Well this is quite a broad question as these differ, depending on what sort of acting role you want to play. I'll go through a few different acting jobs.
Film actor/actress:Most people casting acting roles for films don't go solely on qualifications but on what kind of person you can play, how you look, what your voice sounds like and how you come across in your profile or at an interview. A good way to get some experience in this type of acting and to get yourself noticed as an actor, is to do some tv adverts.
West End Musical...Obviously you will need to be able to sing, not only that employers will look to see if you have done anything at college or uni, this is because you will be performing to a live audience and they want to find out if you have had experience in this before and most uni's, as part of their course, would include getting you to perform in front of people.
Theatre...If you get this type of acting role depends mostly on university qualifactions, this is largely because they want to know that you know about different styles of language, eg. shakesphere, but also that you know how theatre works.
TV Presenter:Some actor/actress employers for tv presenting shows will look solely to what you look like - if your male or female etc... Quite a lot of presenters start off by doing childrens tv, they get noticed by someone else and go on to present higher paid tv shows.
Conclusion...
There are many people who are just born to become actors and ther are many people who work and train very hard to achieve there actor status. My advice to anyone who is pursuing an acting career is to search around for the type of acting you want to do and put yourself out there (a lot!) and in the meantime go to some courses, either part time or full time, gaining , both, experience and maybe some qualifications...
