How to get the best broadband in Wales

Wales is better known for singing, leeks, daffodils, mining and about a dozen other things than it is for its broadband.

Still, the Welsh Assembly is a few years ahead of their British counterparts when it comes to bringing broadband to homes in rural Wales.

Elsewhere the country has access to a wide range of broadband deals but in the countryside it still falls behind.

Unfortunately, schemes which allows homes that wouldn't normally be able to access broadband a grant to have satellite broadband installed, has been greeted with a muted response from those living in the rural areas.

Since the schemes launch in July there has only been 345 approvals and with an estimated 30.000 homes applicable for the grant estimates are suggesting that some homes could be waiting nearly 30 years before they can have access to broadband, and who knows what magical methods of surfing the net have been invented by then.

The Welsh Deputy First Minister has defended the slow start, stating that there have been 345 applications approved with a further 415 being completed.

Despite the Welsh assembly claiming that people are taking opportunity of the grant, the fact that only enough money for 3000 homes has been ear marked for the scheme means that there will be a massive shortfall of around 27000 homes still without broadband.

Anyway the attempts by the Welsh government are better than nothing at all but the main concern surrounding the schemes is the lack of interest from the general public compared to something like the BTs race to infinity campaign, which allowed users to vote for their nearest exchange to be part of the superfast roll out.

It seems that the race to infinity campaign has captured the imagination of people in rural Wales, if those responsible for installing broadband in those parts are to be believed.

Yet it seems strange that many at the moment are not taking advantage of this opportunity, even if satellite isn't the fastest broadband.

It has gotten so bad that the companies that install the broadband have been advertising the fact that grants are available, so hopefully the number of applications for grants should pick up in the future.

Maybe it comes down to poor organisation or a lack of marketing which has led some experts to call the Welsh scheme a flop but be rest assured once word starts to spread about the scheme many in rural Wales will be fighting over each other to be given a 1000 pounds to have Tariam satellite broadband installed in their homes.
