How to keep my mind focus
Question : I have trouble concentrating on the job on hand my mind always wanders;
sometimes I am not able to stay focused on the things that are going around me, even if it is one- on- one conversation. Sometimes I am caught "wandering" by friends and colleagues. It is embarrassing, to ask them to repeat all over again. Typically, I pretend "I got it" and secretly try to find out the missing parts, later. It is awkward. It is affecting my efficiency and performance at work and at the social situations. Can anyone help me?
Ans : This is a normal complaint like common cold. We drive home to office, without ever thinking of the driving part. We all get into "auto pilot" habit and let our mind wander on different, many a time, very trivial things. It is only a bad habit. Like any other habit this can also be broken. Do not worry, there is a solution to this situation.
There are some very simple steps to follow:
First step : First and the foremost, we have to keep our desire, to stay focused, live, all the time. This conscious decision and the resolve is the prime important step.
Second step : Everyday, let us do some simple stretches, for 10 minutes at any part of the day, preferably 3 hours after any meal . Very simple.
Third step: Let us sit 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening; close our eyes and breath normally. We keep our attention on the breath; just watch our breath going in and out. Just for 5 minutes at a time twice a day. That is very simple.
Fourth step : This step is still simpler and easier. We only have to say "thank you " and keep repeating ! When we say " Thank you" let us feel the gratitude. It does not matter who we are thanking. If we are believers we thank God ; if we are non-believers, we thank the energy, the environment, the nature etc. What is important is that we feel grateful.
if I am able to be thankful for all of them, and feel the gratitude inside me, then my mind will stay connected to my task on hand.
Try this for once, you will realise how easy to keep our mind focused on here and now.
Even the mundane task of brushing the teeth, for instance, can be brought into a conscious act, by simply being grateful . While brushing we can be conscious that " I have teeth, that helps me eat and speak properly. I am thankful that I have facilities like water, paste, brush etc, to clean my teeth properly". One may laugh at this proposition, till we look around to see how many senior citizens in the world are suffering without their teeth; they need help even to have normal food. This visual should remind us that how blessed are we to have everything in place, so that we can keep our teeth clean every day. So let us be thankful; let us feel the gratitude.
When we develop this habit of being grateful, another valuable positive payoff we get - we become alive to our surroundings; we notice the nuances and the fine contours of the life itself. Soon enough, we find our interest growing in our daily activities. This interest enhances the awareness and focus. This awareness keeps our mind always here and now. Whatever we do, we always be 100% at it.
One more secret is, we in turn feel blissful in our daily life . We do not have to be hermit in the forest, we can achieve bliss here and now.
Theorem : " Gratitude increases the interest; interest increases the awareness; awareness keeps the mind focused".
Try this for 21 days and feel the difference. Be blissful.
