How to make your Marketing Plan a reality
We need the recipe to make ourmarketing plan a reality, and here it is:
Very specific and small tasks.
We want to slice our work in very small bites. For example: if we need to write the marketing materials, the worst thing we can do is defining a task named: "Write the marketing materials".
Probably we will need to write more than one (emails, flyers, sales letters, whatever) so we just specified a too big too fuzzy task.
And here comes the problem.
Big tasks = Procrastination.
That big task will remain undone forever, it will seem like a big mountain to climb and we will fall in the "tomorrow trap", procrastinating forever.
By the way, in entrepreneurs language tomorrow means never.
What's the solution? We apply (again) our golden rule of"small bites".
First we define what marketing materials we need. Depending on our strategy maybe we will use a sequence of three emails and a free report for our leads or customers, so we specify a task named:
"Write the first email of the sequence".
Short, specific, smaller.
Then another task for the second email, the third email
We can tackle these tasks one at a time, and because they won't seem like giants we won't procrastinate so easily and we get a sense of accomplishment when finished. Contrary to the big task method, we see ourselves advancing towards our goals, instead of feeling that sense of stagnation.
If we want to give away a good big useful report to our customers maybe a task named:"write the free report" is too big again, so we use the golden rule and slice that in smaller pieces or tasks like:
1.- Define the main topics of the report.
2.- Write the first topic (or write two pages for example).
3.- Write the second topic.
6.- Proof read the report.
7.- Give finishing touches to the format.
The vague giant task became a series of easy tasks that don't seem like crossing an endless desert, that's the key.
