How to pack and move a flat panel TV
Now that flat panel TV's have been out on the market for a while a much larger number of families are purchasing them. Plasma, LCD, and LED flat panel TVs are being brung home more than ever before. With a little work and ingenuity most people can figure out a basic install, but packing and moving your TV to a new location can be another story. Flat panel TV's are larger, heavier, and more awkward than any TV's made before them. In addition many flat panel TV's, such as plasmas, need to be kept vertical throughout the duration of the move.
Hopefully at this point you still have the original box and packaging; this material can save you a lot of time and headache, and is a relatively safe way to transport your TV if you still have it. If you don't have any of the original materials you will need to find some things to properly pack and transport the TV. Find blankets or furniture padding at home or from a moving supply store. It is important that you get enough blankets/padding to cover the whole TV. If parts of the TV are exposed they can be scratched, and the screen can be shattered by a variety of objects usually present during the move.
The next important thing to worry about is how you're actually going to move the TV. If it's a decent size TV you'll definitely want to have some friends to help with lifting. All larger TV's are heavy, but even some as small as 37" can be really heavy and awkward. Plasma TV's are especially heavy, and should warrant some extra consideration. Most newer TV's have some type of built in handles on the outside of the unit itself to aid in lifting. Four people is ideal, with two doing the main lifting and two spotters in front and back of the screen.
First place the blankets on the ground and then lift the TV over the blankets, Make sure to stand it up centered over the blanket in the normal viewing position. Have the spotters hold the TV while the other two people wrap the surface of the TV with the blanket and secure it with packing tape. Once this is completed you should be in a better position to transport the TV safely. Its also important to be cautious of the screen, it can be broken or damaged fairly easily if not covered and packed properly.
Lastly, make sure you have an appropriate vehicle for transporting the TV. The TV will need to remain vertical, so smaller cars are generally not going to be a sufficient size. An SUV, van, or moving truck would all be workable vehicles to safely transport the TV. Once you have a vehicle get your friends to help move the TV into place and secure it. Once in the vehicle it may be necessary for one or two spotters to ride with the unit during transit. If the move is long then the TV will need to be secured with straps or bungee cords to prevent any movement. Once you arrive unpack and install your safely transported TV. Enjoy!
