How to plant daisies in Taipei

Daisies are an easy to grow perennial that brightens the flower garden and is great for indoor vases and arrangements

. While there are dozens of varieties, the most popular are the Shasta Daisy (shown above) and African Daisies. Daisies are among the most popular of flowers of both gardeners. And they are perfect for beginning gardeners and those whose thumb is not too green!

Taipei has a semi-tropical climate characterized by hot and humid weather. The most comfortable season to visit is the Fall, when the rainfall is at its lowest and the temperatures average a pleasant mid 20C. February to April are particularly damp with little sunlight, while the summers can be very hot, but often punctuated by heavy thunder showers. Taipei is prone to typhoons from May to October, though the highest concentrations are in August and September. Winters can be quite chilly, with temperatures occasionally falling below 10C at night, though snowfall has never been known to occur.

Daisies are among the easiest of plants to grow.Start Daisy seeds in year one, and they will bloom the second and each following year. You can also divide and separate them as a planting gets too dense and thick. Do this every three or four years and they will reward you with bigger blooms .If you do not do this, the plants will begin to crowd each other out, competing for nutrients and the blooms will be smaller.The easiest way to start growing daisies in your garden is to purchase young plants at your local online Taipei florist where you will find a wide variety of plants that are best suited to your particular area to choose from. When planting these make sure not to plant them any deeper then they were already growing in the container. Water the newly planted daisies thoroughly until they take root. Afterwards water only in times of drought or when they appear dry. Use fertilizer once a month during the growing stage.

Daisies look best when planted in groups of plants or clumps. Every three to four years you will need to dig up and divide your daisy plants to avoid overcrowding. An overcrowded daisy bed will produce small blooms and can lead to unhealthy plants. Daisies are rarely bothered by insects or disease which adds to their popularity and makes them a favorite for the beginning gardener.

In colder climates it is recommended that you cover your daisies with a heavy mulch in the winter to protect them.

Daisies like rich, well drained soil and full sunshine. But they are a hardy and forgiving plant. They will readily tolerate poorer soils and partial shade. They need little attention during the year. A little general purpose fertilizer in the early growth stage will help the plants to develop big and strong stalks and leaves. Just before blooming, provide a fertilizer high in Phosphorous to help promote big, bright blooms.
