Timber is used for construction in a home. It also can be formed into beautiful furniture indoors or outdoors. In the construction of a home, timer is embedded in or is fixed to other materials. The timber should be well seasoned and dry. There are various defects in timber which can occur during or after construction using wood. This may include decay, warping, cracking or rotting. It is advisable to treat it before application even though sometimes it can be done after building the home.
Timber should be protected in home using different methods depending on its location and use. When using it as posts or columns for a home, remember to treat for termites. This is done for any wood coming into contact with soil. A sheet apron can be worn around the posts about one foot from the ground. A shoe can be inserted at the part that is embedded in soil. Old engine oil may also be used to brush around the members. This should only be done where termite infestation is not so rampant.
The timber used for sills, floors, joists and lower walls can be easily attacked by termites. Another problem is decay due to moisture or fungi. It is therefore important to have good drainage around the home. This should drain away from the building to stop water logging or pooling below the house. Vegetation around the house should be at least one foot away to allow for ventilation and dry environment. rain gutters and splash aprons also protect wood from soaking up water. In termite protection, all nests within the compound should be treated and removed.
All wood or timber emended in concrete or masonry should be protected from moisture. A vapor barrier is added between the wood and concrete or masonry. When casting concrete to carry wood floor joists use a damp proof membrane before concreting. This protects against raising moisture. Painting timber is important as it repels water. oil paint should be used on any exposed surfaces. All sawn pieces of timber or saw dust should be removed from site. This will prevent insects or pests to congregate endangering the house.
