How to protect your office building from looters and protestors

Is your office building protected against theft or vandalism caused by looters and protestors? If it isn't, or if you would like to protect it further, there are a few things that it could be worth considering.

First of all, consider how your office building is lit. Lights should provide as much visibility as possible, both inside the office and out. As well as having vandal-proof covers over the lights and power sources, outside lights bathe the walls of your office in light. Your entire perimeter should be well-lit to deter would be looters, especially around doors and other possible entries. Looters will always target a dark building before a well-lit building.

Next, consider your alarm system. This should be supplied and installed by a licensed alarm company. Check the alarm system on a daily basis and advertise its presence with the company's sticker or sign, which can be even more effective than the actual alarm system. Similarly, consider your security doors. These should be of solid construction, metal-lined and secured with heavy metal crossbars. All exposed hinges should be pinned to prevent removal.

Make sure that the windows of your buildings have secure locks. Heavy metal grates may be used on windows of high vulnerability (such as rear windows), and as such it's important to be prepared for such an attack.

The exterior, including the roof and walls, should also be checked thoroughly. Secure all openings and maintain good visibility by not allowing landscaping, boxes, rubbish bins, vehicles, or equipment near your building where they might provide concealment or access to the roof.

Make sure your safe is fireproof, burglar-resistant, anchored securely and in plain view. Leave it open when it is empty, and use it to lock up valuables when the business is closed. Change the combination whenever someone with access is no longer your employee.

On a similar note, a master key system where one key opens all locks may be convenient, but it may not be the best for security. Code all keys, keep them securely locked when not in use, and do not allow employees to leave them lying around or make duplicates. Change locks whenever you suspect key security is at risk.

Burglar-resistant glass treatments are also useful. An example would be the installation of polyester security film, which can be used together with the alarm's glass break sensor. Glass tinting can also be an extremely effective method of deterring looters from breaking into office buildings.

There is no method that is completely guaranteed to prevent thieves from attempting to break into your property, but if the above-mentioned tactics are practiced, you will certainly reduce the chances of looting or damage happening to your office building.
