How to put up shrink wrap window film kits on your windows to block the cold drafts
The tools you will need for this project is,scissors, hair dryer and the window film kits. These kits are not hard to install. But it does require patience and time. When you go to the store to try and find the kits. The kit(s) you want are the kits that have the shrink wrap plastic and the double sided tape. There are different sized kits for different sized windows, pick out the kit(s) that is right for you. This kit will make the window air tight and look good if done right.
When ready to install the kits.Put all the contents and tools near you for easy reach when you need them.To begin before measuring and cutting the tape, look for an evenly spaced flat surface that goes all around on the inside sides of your window(s).This is where the tape will go.Then get the roll of double sided tape and the scissors.Hold the roll of tape up to the top inside of the window and unroll the tape from one corner to the other and cut.Do this step on all four sides.
When finished with measuring and cutting the tape.Get a wet rag and clean the area(s) where the tape will go.You are cleaning these areas so the tape has a clean surface to be applied to.let dry all the way or To dry these areas quicker, use the hair dryer. The tape will stick better to a clean surface rather than a dirty surface. Before applying the tape you need to heat up the surfaces that the tape is going on.The tape will not adhere to cold surfaces. If you are starting with the top of the window, heat it up good with the hair dryer, going from 1 side to the other. then get the strip of tape for the top and stick the tape on from one side to the other. When the tape is on then press the tape on more with your fingers.Wait a few minutes to let the tape cure, then peel off the top of the tape with your nails to expose the sticky part of the tape, this part of the tape holds the plastic on.Repeat this for all the other sides too.
When the tape is on all the sides ,get your plastic film, align the plastc film over the window,so the plastic covers the window and stick the plastic film on from 1 side to the other, after one side is on,use your fingers to press the plastic on the tape more and repeat this step until the plastic is on all four sides. Then get your hair dryer,go over all the corners of the plastic to heat up the tape more and press the sides of the plastic again,to make sure it is stuck good.
The last step is to get your hair dryer and heat up the plastic film, starting from the top, going from one side to the other and gradually going to the bottom. When you are heating up the plastic, the plastic will tighten up and should be wrinkle free.Don't keep the hair dryer on one spot for a long time or the edges of the plastic and tape will come off the window.Having the plastic on your windows will keep the cold drafts from the window glass from coming in your house. For more tips about blocking drafts and keeping the heat in the rooms in your house.Go to the resources section below.
