If you need to carry it during rain, make sure to keep it covered in a plastic bag so that water does not seep through to your phone. Do not keep your cell phone near liquids or in your breast pocket as it may fall out in water such as the toilet bowl.

All these steps will definitely protect your phone from getting wet or help in recovering it even if gets washed up in the washing machine.
