How to remove Bug out of a Computer

Computer bugs come in many forms and can cause serious problems when they arise. Finding and fixing bugs is one of the main tasks faced by computer programmers on a daily basis, but as a user you do not need to understand them to any level of complexity. However, having an awareness of what a bug is on a general level can be helpful to anyone who uses computers on a regular basis.

Causes

Bugs are caused by errors within programming source code or compiled (executable) applications. Bugs can occur within software programs installed on your computer, on the operating system itself or on applications you access over the Internet. There are many different types of errors that can cause a programming bug: syntax errors (the incorrect use of programming language syntax, similar to a grammatical error in natural language), design flaws and sometimes errors caused by compiling programs. In general, programs that are tested thoroughly are less likely to contain bugs.

Types

Some bugs are caused by numerical or arithmetic error -- for example, where a calculation has produced an invalid result. If the algorithms within a program have not been worked through correctly, this can cause logical bugs, for example, where the code execution gets stuck in an infinite loop (an endless cycle that stops the program from proceeding). Programs often contain excerpts of code that take inputs from some external location, and if these are not present, bugs may arise.

Effects

If a bug occurs when you are running a program on your computer, it may cause the program to crash, and potentially also cause problems for other programs. Infinite loops are among the most common types of bugs, and when they occur your computer's resources (memory and processing power) may become tied up, preventing you from being able to carry out any other tasks. Bugs do not always actually cause a program to crash; sometimes they just slow down its execution, as well as that of other programs running.

Solutions

If you have a running program that is causing a problem, you may need to force it to stop running in order to regain control of your system. If closing the window containing the program does not work, you can try closing it through your computer's Task Manager if you're on Windows, or Activity Monitor if you're on a Mac. Locate the program and choose "End Task" on Windows, or choose the Apple icon and "Force Quit" on Mac.

Feedback

Depending on the program in question, you may be able to provide feedback to the developers so that they can fix the bug if it is not already being dealt with. Many applications automate this process when you force a program to quit. In these cases you will typically see a window pop up asking you if you want to send a bug report to the makers of the software letting them know about the problem. You do not need to do this, but your information may help contribute to improvements in future versions of the program.
