How to take flawless photos - a few tips from a novice/amateur

I've only had my DSLR for a couple of years, and have taken many hundreds of photos. The great things about digital cameras is that you can take many shots, and experimentation is the key. I have dicovered along the way a few things and would like to share these tips with you:

To eradicate shadows when taking photos outdoors on bright sunny days it's a good idea to use your cameras flash function. The flash will get rid of shadows that might appear if the sun is at an angle. Might seem or look silly at the time but believe me, it has helped on numerous occasions.

Pick a backdrop that will showcase your subjects. If possible pick something that won't distract the viewer's eye from them.

To avoid having strangers in your photos, pay attention to what is going on around you. Try to take the photo when there are no distractions. Think: photobomb :-)

Tell your subjects what you are looking for prior to taking the photo. Presenting directions will help you get the shot you want the first time. But sometimes the best shots are taken on the spur of the moment. Over time, you will work out what is best.

When taking outdoors shots place your back to the sun. This will put the spotlight where it belongs, on the subjects themselves.

With a bit of practice and patience everyone can take great photos and make the precious fleeting moments of everyday life lasts a lifetime.
