How to win the lottery - bad habits that will stop you winning

A lot of regular lottery players will have a strategy that includes particular numbers. If that's you I have bad news - you'll never win. Any statistician will tell you that a lottery is a lottery. It's a completely random event. No number has more chance of winning than another. Having said that, approaching the lottery with a strategy is a good thing. There are things you can do to improve your odds, but having 'lucky' numbers isn't one of them.

Here are some examples of easy patterns people choose because they form a straight line or a diagonal:

1-2-3-4-5-6

2-4-6-8-10-12

42-41-40-39-38-37

It is very unlikely these patterns will come up at all. Don't use lazy patterns. Don't use straight or diagonal lines - they don't win.

Another common mistake is to choose birthdays. Again, you're severly limiting your chances. Using birthdays you will not be chosing numbers above 31 or worse - if you are sticking to months, your selection will not go above 12. Also, because a lot of players do use birthdays, these numbers will appear on a lot of tickets. So in the unlikely event that you do win, you will be sharing the winnings with a lot more people.

As I have said before, playing the lottery is a random event, but with these tips you can improve your chances. Do have a plan and stick to it.
