Lying awake at night, tossing and turning, for hours on end can be frustrating

, particularly when you know it's going to make you tired and irritable the next day.

Insomnia is actually very common, with a third of adults experiencing sleep problems in a year. Whilst for most it's short lived, insomnia can be a chronic problem for 1 in 10 people.

There are a variety of causes, including stress, anxiety, physical pain, noise, irregular sleep patterns, caffeine, alcohol and the side effects of medication. And when people aren't getting the sleep they need, which is typically 7-8 hours for adults, they can then have poor concentration, have more accidents and at a higher risk of being ill from a weak immune system. So, as you can imagine, when you suffer from insomnia it can have a serious impact on daily life.

The first step in treating insomnia is to try and solve its underlying cause through lifestyle changes. This can include cutting back on stimulants (caffeine, nicotine and alcohol) avoiding naps during the day, getting up the same time everyday and exercising to relieve stress or make your body more tired. A warm milky night cap can also help induce you into a slumber.


If none of these work then pop down to your local pharmacy for advice. There are herbal remedies you can try (e.g. lavender aromatic oils) and sleep aid remedies that can make you drowsy, such as Nytol and Kalms, and help send you into the land of nod.
