Alongside borrowing and debt consolidation, security is often cited as one of a credit card's virtues.
Unlike the other two services though - when one is fairly sure what one is getting - security is often a murky issue for card providers, obliquely and vaguely referred to as if simply saying it could ward off card criminals.
Card criminals isn't such a melodramatic term as it sounds at first: millions of pounds are lost through card fraud every year in the UK alone and as card use increases and the way we use our card continues to vary so too do the ways that fraudsters try to defraud us.
Skimming, getting hold of credit card details with a fake card machine or hole in the wall, can often be difficult to detect or, in the case of retailers taking the card out of your sight, hard to accuse a company or business of without being thrown out as well as potentially drained of cash.
Criminals can also simply look at your pin number when you type it in and relive you of your card at a later date.
When it comes to online banking the ways that you can be parted with your money grow hugely and include fake banking emails and malware, which is, as it sounds, simply a malicious form of software, which can steal online banking passwords and take money from an account.
Taken as a whole, then, there are plenty of reasons to look at security measures when you compare credit cards but what are they?
The first thing to note is that they type of card can make a difference. Straightforward one special offer, 0% balance transfer credit cards, for example, may not have the extra security of a card that is designed specifically for using for purchases.
After this point, all cards have a basic form of security, or rather protection, under law. The consumer credit act says that the credit card provider is a jointly responsible - with the retailer - for seeing that services paid for on card are delivered so this is a basic form.
Some providers than monitor accounts for fraud and some will send texts or emails when unusual activity is detected. Some also have guarantees on certain types of product (e.g. on delivered items).
These are all points worth bearing in mind especially when looking at instant decision credit cards, when you may not have the opportunity to back out later.
