The OfficeJet 6500 comes in HP's current black and white business inkjet livery

. It has a single-line OLED display, presumably to save space, which means the user has to use the navigational arrows more often to scroll through menus. There is a 250-sheet input tray which can handle a variety of media, from 4-by-6-inch photo paper to legal- size sheets. The output tray fits directly above the feed tray. In the bottom left of the front panel are twin memory card slots which cater for MemoryCard, SD and xD. There is no USB socket at the front. Sockets for USB, Ethernet and a fax cable are located at the back of the printer.

Setting up the HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One in a network was straightforward. Just connect the USB cable and run the automated installation program from the provided disc.

In speed tests the HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One printed plain text at a speed of 12 pages per minute (ppm) and its colour output was 3 ppm, reasonable speeds but well short of HP's advertised speeds of 32 ppm for monochrome and 31 ppm for graphics.

The HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One's photo output was not great with some obvious tinting in black and white prints and a tendency for dark areas in all photos to come out slightly grey, giving a slightly hazy impression. Graphics output is a strong point, with eye-catching colours, solid fills and smooth gradients. Fonts were easily readable and well formed.

The HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One uses four cartridges; the CD971AE black (420 pages) or CD975AE (1,200 pages) and the CD972AE cyan, CD973AE magenta and CD974AE yellow (all 700 pages.

As well as printing the 6500 also scans, faxes and copies all of which worked well enough. When operating these functions you can do so from the control panel on the front or use commands in programs such as Photoshop and word. To help put your mind at rest a one year limited warranty is provided.

The HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One offers fast wireless speeds, good document print quality, a high-capacity paper tray, and an attractive, fairly compact design. The only really disappointing thing about it is the poor quality of photo prints.
