Hsk Takes Root In Armenia

the Confucius Institute of Armenia held this years first Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi

, or HSK (Chinese proficiency test), after successfully running tests six times in 2011.

Since the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Armenia, the number of Armenian people wanting to learn Chinese has been increasing day by day. Meanwhile, more and more companies and organizations find their translators here. Studying Chinese has brought benefits to the local students and created conditions for the economic and cultural exchanges between Chinese and Armenian governments and people. With the upsurge in Chinese learning, there are more candidates participating in the HSK and the level of proficiency is also rising. Nowadays, more and more people from different sectors of the Armenian society including students of the Confucius Institute are taking the test. The HSK benchmarks students improvement in Chinese.

The students of the Confucius Institute participated in the HSK to apply for scholarships from Han ban/Confucius Institute Headquarters and to test their Chinese proficiency, as well so as to meet the growing demand for Chinese translators. Many students have taken the test several times in order to raise their score. (Mandarin course in Shanghai)

The Chinese-language teacher in the local university took the test in order to get her Masters degree and teacher qualifications. She has been studying Chinese for many years and speaks Chinese with great fluency. Sometimes it is difficult to tell whether she is Chinese or Armenian when she is speaking Chinese.

Young soldiers of the local military service who have studied Chinese for more than a year participated in HSK Level 3 test. One said that he did well in the test and hoped to be able to work later as a Chinese-Armenian translator.

Pinyin is a form of understanding the Chinese language without having to go through its hard characterization first. Pinyin was first passed in China in about 1958 and has since become the only official Romanization script for the Chinese language accepted in China, Singapore, American Library Association, and The US Library of Congress. Since the HSK held by the Confucius Institute in Armenia in March, 2011, all staff, from Chinese directors of the Institute to Chinese teachers, try to maintain the authority of the test by setting a good example and by maintaining test discipline. Each time, the test is held continuously. On March 18, 2012, four tests, including levels 1, 2, 3 and 5, were held. The HSK has been broadly recognized as an authoritative measure of Chinese proficiency, and it becomes a common practice for Armenian students to Learn Chinese and to participate in the HSK.
