Huge blast in San Bruno; neighborhood on fire
A huge explosion rocked San Bruno shortly after 6 p.m
. today, sending up a massive fireball and a white and black plume of smoke that is visible for miles.
At least a dozen houses and thick stands of trees in the neighborhood are engulfed in a blaze that appears to be being fed by a continuous source of fuel. The blaze is jumping from structure to structure unabated as emergency crews rush in and residents clear out.
One injured person has been taken to San Francisco General Hospital and one to St. Francis Medical Center, said Rachael Kagan, a spokeswoman for S.F. General.
A San Bruno police dispatcher said she did not know what had exploded. Some witnesses calling into television stations are saying they believe a

The blast spot, near Skyline Boulevard and San Bruno Drive, is west of San Francisco International Airport. But Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the agency had no information on any planes crashing.
"Don't think it's a plane but not certain," Gregor said in an e-mail.
A duty manager at SFO, Michael Brown, said, "According to our control tower, there's no reason to suspect it's an aircraft." He said the airport knew of no

There was also speculation that the explosion was caused by natural gas. A Pacific Gas and Electric Co. spokesman said it cannot confirm that the fire is being fed by one of its gas lines. Its workers are investigating the situation.
San Mateo County sheriff's deputies and police were evacuating residents near the fireball. Firefighters are going door to door, ordering people out of their houses and setting up equipment to battle the raging flames. Drivers on nearby Interstate 280 and other roads near the area are stopping to gawk as the relentless flames surge to the sky.
Leigh Bishop, staff pastor at Church of the Highlands in San Bruno, was standing in the parking lot preparing for a night meeting when the blast ripped into the sky behind the church.
"It was absolutely frightening," Bishop said. "A huge yellowing billow of flame. I thought it was right behind our church building and ran in to pull the fire alarm and get everyone out of the church."
He realized it was about three quarters of a mile away.
"It's still going tremendously. It was a huge, huge fireball."
He did not see any planes before the blast.
"The initial explosion
