The Maldives is popularly known for its beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, amazing dive spots and its paradise like picturesque beauty. A tiny island nestled in the Indian Ocean, Maldives is a vibrant land, known for its rich heritage and tradition and popular architectural spots. Perhaps its most iconic historical structure, the Hukuru Miskiiy is the oldest mosque in the country. Established in 1656, the mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar and is located in the country's capital, Male. An interesting fact about the Maldives is that it initially adopted Buddhism as a religion. However today, Islam is practised by the majority of the people.

The mosque is famous for its brilliant architecture. Built with coral stones, the mosque features an abundance of coral carvings. Beautiful to view, these carvings portray ornamental designs and Arabic inscriptions in its exterior and interior walls. Stepping into the mosque will a feast for the eyes as it depicts exquisite designs of wooden carvings and lacquer work, some of which are most unique to the beholder. A combination of different types of wood such as sandalwood, redwood and teak are believed to have been used to build the frames of its doors, windows and roof.

Built on the foundation of an ancient temple, the Hukuru Miskiiy mosque faces west towards the holy place of Mecca. A striped carpet is laid on the ground, depicting the correct angle for prayer, helping the worshipers who come in regularly for Friday congregation. An important day of the week for the Muslim population Friday brings together a large crowd of devotees, offering prayer amidst the majestic surrounding of the mosque. It is also a place where the Imam, the leader of the congregation prayer provides insightful advice to the followers. Considered a national treasure to the Maldives, the mosque is known for its striking large domes. Featured as a part of the ceiling of the mosque, the domes can be seen from afar. In addition, there are ancient tombstones that could be seen around the mosque, dedicated to the past heroes, nobles and sultans.
